PROTECTING CHILDREN IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY

Kismat Radio and children’s charity the NSPCC have come together to raise awareness of issues affecting the safety and welfare of children in our community.

The NSPCC provides information and advice to the public about protecting children from abuse. Child abuse is when an adult deliberately harms a child. The abuse can be physical, sexual or emotional. It can also be neglecting or bullying a child.

Sadly child abuse happens throughout society and in every community including Asian communities. In a recent survey of 500 British Asians, 37% said they had suspected that a child they knew was being abused.

Many children are too worried or scared to tell anyone if they have been abused. The NSPCC believes that it is everyone’s responsibility to protect them.

Where to get help
The NSPCC’s public helplines include a special helpline on
0800 096 7719
for Asians who prefer to speak to someone who understands the Asian community and culture. All the counsellors on the helpline are Asian and speak different Asian languages as well as English. Callers to the helpline do not need to give their name to the counsellor if they don’t want to.

The NSPCC also has a special helpline for children called ChildLine on 0800 1111.

If you suspect a child is being harmed it is important to report your concerns straight away. You could be their only chance to get help.
